I'm getting excited about my return to Bali. Scott and I leave on Friday May 15th, so we still have one week to get ready, study our itinerary and pack. This will actually be a return to Bali for me because I traveled there with my aunt, Louise, in 1968. I was 11 years old, so I'm giving away my age. This is a picture of us taken around that time. I haven't been able to find photos that were actually taken during this trip to Bali, so this one will have to do. Eze used to make me wear my Girl Scout uniform when we traveled. At that time my sash and badges attracted much attention and opened doors for us. I remember visiting the pilot in the cockpit as we flew over the Pacific (such a thing would never happen today) and being treated like a visiting dignitary everywhere we went. Another thing that made quite an impression on me as an 11 year old was the fact that many women who lived in rural areas of Bali wore nothing above the waist. I dare say this won't be the case now. Oh I hope we won't see people wearing NY Yankee baseball caps and NYFD t-shirts. But we might! I hope Bali hasn't been transformed by the tourism boom that's occurred over the past fifteen years. I hope it still retains some of its original culture. We'll know soon enough.
